Vision

Sovereign Home OS is a privacy-first, AI-native operating system for the home.

It transforms a user-owned computer—such as a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, or dedicated home server—into a personal digital hub that unifies local services behind a single interface while keeping the user in complete control of their data.

Rather than depending on cloud ecosystems, Sovereign Home OS allows people to own their digital infrastructure, automate their home, manage their information, and interact with all of it through a local AI assistant.

The goal is not to replace every existing open-source project. Instead, Sovereign Home OS provides a cohesive platform that brings the best self-hosted software together into a consistent, secure, and intelligent experience.


The Problem

Today's digital lives are fragmented.

A privacy-conscious user often runs multiple independent systems:

  • Home automation
  • DNS filtering
  • Local AI
  • Personal documents
  • Notes
  • Calendars
  • Password managers
  • Media servers
  • File storage

Each system has:

  • Different authentication
  • Different user interfaces
  • Different APIs
  • Different update mechanisms
  • Different permission models

Users become system integrators rather than simply using their own technology.

Meanwhile, mainstream alternatives such as Alexa, Google Home, and Apple Home rely heavily on cloud services, require significant trust in third parties, and often make the user the product rather than the customer.

There is currently no unified operating platform that combines local AI, self-hosted services, privacy, and simplicity into one coherent experience.


The Solution

Sovereign Home OS provides a local operating platform where AI becomes the primary interface to personal computing.

Instead of opening individual applications, users interact naturally with the platform.

Examples include:

  • "Why can't I access this website?"
  • "Turn off the living room lights."
  • "When does my passport expire?"
  • "Find my monitor receipt."
  • "Add milk to the shopping list."
  • "Summarize today's calendar."

The AI does not replace the underlying software.

Instead, it orchestrates it.

Each service remains responsible for its own domain while Sovereign Home OS provides:

Core Principles

User Ownership

Users own their hardware.

Users own their software.

Users own their data.

Users own their backups.

The platform must never require a proprietary cloud service to function.


Privacy First

Privacy is the default, not a premium feature.

No advertising.

No mandatory telemetry.

No behavioural profiling.

No data monetization.

Any optional cloud integration must be explicit, transparent, and replaceable.


Local First

Everything that can reasonably run locally should run locally.

Cloud services may enhance the experience but should never become a dependency for core functionality.

If the internet connection disappears, the home should continue functioning.


AI as an Interface

Artificial intelligence is not the product.

Artificial intelligence is the interface.

The value comes from connecting existing services together in a natural way rather than replacing them.


Open Ecosystem

The platform should embrace existing open-source software whenever practical.

Sovereign Home OS succeeds by integrating mature projects instead of reimplementing them.


Modularity

Every feature should be optional.

Users install only the capabilities they need.

The system grows through plugins rather than a continuously expanding core.


Simplicity

Complexity belongs inside the platform, not in front of the user.

Installing software, configuring services, updating components, and interacting with the system should feel like using a modern operating system rather than managing containers.

The platform consists of five major layers.

Core Platform

Responsible for:

AI Layer

Responsible for:

  • Conversation
  • Intent understanding
  • Tool selection
  • Capability orchestration
  • Context management

The AI does not directly control external services.

Instead, it invokes well-defined platform capabilities.


Capability Layer

Plugins expose capabilities rather than internal APIs.

Examples include:

  • home.control
  • documents.search
  • dns.query
  • calendar.read
  • shopping.list

This allows multiple implementations to provide the same capability without changing the AI.


Plugins

Plugins provide domain expertise.

Examples include:

  • DNS filtering
  • Home automation
  • Document management
  • Shopping
  • Calendar
  • Knowledge base
  • Password management

Plugins remain independent from one another.


User Interfaces

Multiple interfaces communicate with the same platform.

Examples include:

  • Web dashboard
  • Voice assistant
  • Mobile application
  • Command-line interface
  • External APIs

The user experience remains consistent regardless of interface.


Voice

Voice is an optional interface.

It is not a requirement.

Users who never connect a microphone should still enjoy the complete platform through the web interface.

When enabled, lightweight Voice Satellites stream audio to the server where speech recognition, AI reasoning, and text-to-speech occur.

The intelligence remains centralized while endpoints remain simple and inexpensive.


Hardware Philosophy

Sovereign Home OS is hardware-independent.

The recommended entry point is a Raspberry Pi.

The platform should also support larger systems including mini PCs and home servers.

More powerful hardware enables additional workloads without changing the software architecture.


Business Philosophy

Sovereign Home OS is intended to become a sustainable business without compromising user ownership.

Potential revenue sources include:

  • Official hardware
  • Optional support plans
  • Plugin marketplace
  • Enterprise offerings
  • Certification

User data must never become part of the business model.

The company should succeed because it builds valuable software, not because it collects valuable data.


Non-Goals

Sovereign Home OS is not:

  • Another cloud AI assistant
  • A replacement for every existing open-source project
  • A proprietary smart-home ecosystem
  • A data collection platform
  • A surveillance device
  • A mandatory subscription service

Initial MVP

The first public milestone intentionally focuses on a small, complete experience.

The MVP consists of:

  • Local web dashboard
  • Local AI chat
  • Plugin system
  • Capability registry
  • Authentication
  • One production-quality plugin (DNS filtering)

Voice, hardware products, marketplaces, enterprise features, and advanced integrations are intentionally deferred.

The objective is to validate the platform architecture before expanding its capabilities.


Long-Term Vision

Sovereign Home OS aims to become the operating system for personal digital sovereignty.

Rather than replacing individual applications, it provides a trusted foundation where local software, intelligent interfaces, and user ownership naturally coexist.

In the same way that desktop operating systems unified personal computing, Sovereign Home OS seeks to unify self-hosted computing around a single principle:

The user—not the platform vendor—should remain in control.
